Holiday Rental House
Torside is in the beautiful Peak District village of Castleton, Derbyshire and it was our family home for 12 years. It is a traditional Derbyshire limestone cottage set in its own garden and decorated to English Heritage standards. It is very much a vernacular building with rubble walls, wooden floors suspended over the bare earth and all external walls are lime plastered with pony hair binding it together! The cottage has a double master bedroom and a travel cot can be set up on request. The second bedroom has a single bed and a small double bed. There is a fully equipped beautiful dining kitchen and a cosy living room with x2 2-seater leather sofas, an open fire and smart TV. The cottage is located in the stunning and 'other worldly' Peak Cavern Gorge, beneath a ruined Norman Castle. It is a short walk away from the village centre, with 6 pubs, several cafes and Blue John jewellery shops. There is also an informative Visitors Centre and 4 show caverns to investigate. Torside is the nearest dwelling to Peak Cavern, which has the largest land based cave entrance in the British Isles and is also a SSSI. The cavern was home to one of Britain's last troglodyte communities until 1915. Peak Cavern is owned by the Duchy of Lancaster and several tours are conducted daily. Torside sleeps 4 (+1 optional folding bed). Weekly prices from £295-£795, fully inclusive. Complimentary unlimited Wi-Fi, Smart TV, bike storage available, coal provided, children of all ages welcome, toys and books available. More

We really enjoyed our week in Torside Cottage. The cottage is a very comfortable, sensitively modernised historic building. Castleton is a lovely village with great amenities and perfectly located for enjoying the Peak District countryside. We would definitely like to stay at Torside again.

About the neighbourhood
Castleton is well-equipped for visitors. There are 6 pubs, restaurants and tea rooms, 4 show caverns (and events therein), Blue-John Jewellery shops, Peveril Castle, Ancient Garland Ceremony, Christmas lights, Winnats Pass, geology galore (e.g. Mam Tor landslip), walker's paradise, post office, village store and bakery and an informative Visitor's Centre. Many major tourist attractions are within a short drive: Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall, Lyme hall and Park and Eyam (historically a Plague village). Child focused attractions include The Heights of Abraham and Gulliver's Kingdom (Matlock Bath, 27 miles) and Alton Towers (38 miles). Buxton, the highest market town and an historic spa is a 20 minute drive away.
Getting around
There is so much to do and see in the village and there is amazing walking in the surrounding hills, so that most people are satisfied staying in the local area and sightseeing on foot. There is a railway station in Hope about 30 mins walk away or less than 5 minutes in a car. Trains run regularly to Sheffield and Manchester and beyond. There is also a bus station in the village with regular buses to Sheffield and Bakewell.
