In 1759 this cottage in Sandwich, UK, was the home and shop of Thomas Paine, founding father of the United States and French Republic. He created the phrase 'United States of America', and was author of three of the bestsellers of the eighteenth century, including the cornerstone of American democracy, Common Sense plus the bible of English radicalism, the Rights of Man. The cottage now provides a unique holiday experience in the most complete medieval town in England. Following a careful restoration this cottage will transport you back in time with its period furniture and wonderful old beams. Come and learn about the life of Thomas Paine, browse the collection of revolutionary period literature and of course the works of Tom Paine himself. Come and learn about the life of Thomas Paine, browse the collection of revolutionary period literature and of course the works of Tom Paine himself. The cottage is larger than the frontage would suggest having had a Victorian kitchen extension. There is a good sized living room with a reading area. The stairs lead to a bedroom with two period single beds and a wonderful early Victorian dresser of mahogany, the upstairs rooms are wonderfully characterful with their beamed ceilings and walls and floors with extraordinary slopes on them. The next bedroom has a beautiful mahogany double bed from ~ 1870. The bathroom upstairs has both a shower and bath. There is a log fire in the living room and a good supply of logs is included in the rental fee. Parking is free of charge in the Guildhall car park a few minutes walk from the cottage. There is a south facing cottage garden for visitors to enjoy, it's carefully tended and is a typical English cottage garden full of flowers during the summer months. More

Visited the cottage for a long weekend. It's full of character and superbly equipped. Robin made the whole experience smooth and was always helpful. Sandwich is great with lots of places to eat and drink. I'd recommend a stay here without hesitation.

Perfectly located to explore the historic town of Sandwich on foot. The beds are comfortable, kitchen a lovely place to prepare meals, and so cosy to relax in after a day of driving around Kent. We enjoyed reading about an original owner. Thomas Paine.

About the neighbourhood
With its ancient buildings, nature reserves, golf courses, delightful country pubs, cafes and restaurants, the medieval Cinque Port of Sandwich is a must to visit for the discerning tourist. Sandwich is the most complete medieval town in England having been remarkably well preserved with Strand street having the longest line of timbered houses in the country. The medieval street layout has largely remained intact. There are all the main facilities you would need in a town with plenty of choice to eat out and a wonderful Art Deco cinema. Boat trips go out to see the seals and there are excellent walks out to Sandwich Bay. Sandwich has good train links to London as well as Eurostar services to Paris. Excellent beaches can be found at Broadstairs and wonderful walks along the White Cliffs of ...
How to get there
KLM offer twice daily flights from Manston Airport which is very easy to use since there are no crowds. Services operate to Amsterdam which is an international hub. We find this service very much better than using Heathrow or Gatwick airport. Regular trains run to London and the railway station is a 10 minute walk away. Buses leave from close to the cottage and serve the main local towns, the bus is often the best option for shopping trips to Canterbury.
