Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Lovely week
The property was perfect for us and our dog. Well furnished, spotless and ideally situated for us to tour Northumberland. The secure garden was ideal for our dog and for watching the huge variety of visiting birds. The views over the local countryside were superb even in the torrential rain. We’re already looking forward to sampling Kate’s hospitality again next year - hopefully in better weather!!

Just perfect!
This is our third stay at The Hemmel and hopefully not our last! Our friends stayed in the nearby cottage and enjoyed it just as much. The Hemmel is such a lovely clean, cozy cottage and Kate is a wonderful hostess, always on hand if needed with helpful advice and local knowledge. The cottage has everything you could want, including a dish washer and under floor heating. We were blessed with the weather and the cute spring lambs at this time of year. I could have sat and watched them all day. The cottage is also a great base for lots of days out. We visited nearby Bellingham, a lovely little market village, which has some lovely waterfalls, well worth the trek up to the top to see the big waterfall. We also visited Bambrough and walked on the award winning beach to Seahouses. We'll definitely be back!

Perfect place to get away from it all.
The Hemmel is a beautifully rennovated barn just outside Otterburn. We loved our stay . Busy days walking, cycling and going to the beach and perfect evenings in front of the log burner. Kate is an excellent host and we hope to return.

Gorgeous dog friendly barn conversion!
Stayed in the Hemmel for a few nights with my wife and our two dogs while in the area on business, and it really is every bit as good as all of the reviews say. About a mile out of Otterburn, the cottage is beatifully appointed, and has everything you could wish for, comfortable seating and beds, the underfloor heating and in particular log burner made for a cosy stay even during the coldest and wettest of January weeks. The whole property is absolutely immaculate at times it felt like we were the first guests ever to use it. Bathroom is like something from a top end 5* hotel and the kitchen has everything needed to be self sufficient, if that's what you are looking to do. Rear garden is totally enclosed so was great for the dogs to have a little roam, also with a wide variety of walks on the doorstep and Kielder Water / Forest within a short drive. Kate was the perfect host, leaving warm scones waiting for us on our arrival (luckily the dog only got to one of them before we found them), and we look forward to returning when next in the area to this hidden gem!

Heavenly Hemmel
The Hemmel is a barn conversion in a beautiful location with a breathtaking view of the valley and distant hills. The accommodation is in our opinion 5 star plus. The property exceeded our expectations and was immaculate throughout with an extremely comfortable bed. We were blessed with good weather and enjoyed al fresco dining at every opportunity. The owner, who lived close by, was friendly and very helpful at all times. A most wonderful holiday that will never be forgotten. Many lovely places to visit, Corbridge, Kielder Water and Forest, Belsay Hall, Wallington Hall, Rothbury, Bellingham, Otterburn Hall and surrounding area including the picturesque moorland.

Sensational...
This was our 2nd visit to The Hemmel, we’ve also stayed in The Granary (part of Old Town Farm) twice. I really can’t praise this property enough, spotlessly clean, high quality furniture & facilities. Incredible views from the living area (see photos). The property has absolutely everything you need, never stayed anywhere else where the kitchen has a garlic press! Kate the owner is so friendly & happy to assist you in your stay, we also had homemade scones waiting for us when we arrived which were lovely. Ideal location to explore the amazing county of Northumberland. Amazing, incredible accommodation, look no further!!
