About the neighbourhood
The River Thames is close by for fishing and boating and the local pub The Barley Mow (as mentioned in Three Men and a Boat by Jerome K Jerome) is a short walk away and serves local beers and food with an enclosed garden. The village shop/post office sells basic groceries, newspapers, milk, freshly baked bread, croissants and there are several large supermarkets just a short drive away.Abingdon is the oldest inhabited town in England and its museum of local history on the main square was recently completely refurbished and is now accessible to everyone, with a cafe in the basement. There is a regular Farmers Market in the main square and this is also where special royal occasions are uniquely celebrated wit... more
Getting around
There is a small railway station (Culham) about 15 minutes walk from the cottage which is useful for trains into Oxford and which run every 2 hours or so.
It is also possible to get trains to London but it is a slow route taking up to 90 minutes, so it can be quicker to travel first to Didcot Parkway or Oxford station (via train or car) and then catch the express train, which only takes about 40 minutes. There is a long stay car park at Didcot.
There is no longer a local bus service.
