Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Widecombe cottage
Had a fantastic 10 day stay here, the cottage is superb, with a very private rear garden, with fantastic views over farmland. The cottage is very comfortable with everything you need on hand. The location is also great, there is a local pub 5mins walk "The Rugglestone" lovely pub great food!. Our hosts Sean & Helen were very friendly and easy going, nothing to much trouble for them, making our stay a great break.. In a nutshell, can't wait to go back!!..

Lovely cottage in a prime position on Dartmoor
An excellent stay at this lovely cottage in a prime position on Dartmoor. We were blessed with amazing weather to enable us to have great views whilst on our walks and when enjoying a meal at the nearby Rugglestone. Many thanks to the friendly hosts Vicki and Miles - you have a little gem here in Widecombe.

Simple, comfortable perfection.
This is just a wonderful, idyllic place to stay. It's got absolutely everything that you need and is is a perfectly located base for exploring the moor. We never drive on holidays and there is no need to from here - as there are great short and long walks in all directions from the front door. Becks and Richard have hosting off to an absolute tee - not intrusive but very friendly and natural. Their welcome of fresh-as-possible eggs, a bottle of wine and the doesn't-get-better-than-this Victoria sponge goes above and beyond. A five minute walk from one of England's finest pubs too and a further five minutes to another great pub and the picture-perfect village - it really doesn't get much better than this. Except that once you've sat in the lovely, back garden with a glass of local cider or wine and take in its views long into the distance and the nature that surrounds you, you might not feel the need to venture out in the evening as often as you'd planned. That's how it worked for us anyway. Go. Enjoy. We'll be back with Richard and Becks just as soon as we can. (By the way, I rarely leave a review of anywhere but had to make an exception in this exceptional case).

Widecombe Cottage...........Wonderful, quiet, perfect
Widecombe cottage is a 2 person cottage about a mile from the centre of Widecombe on the moor village in Dartmoor. Its the perfect location to act as a base for exploring the moor either by car or on foot. It comprises of a lounge/diner with open plan kitchen, with a large bedroom upstairs complete with a lovely bathroom. Heating is under floor with a wood burner that heats the whole cottage to toasty hot. At night its silent outside and pitch black, just what you need for a restful holiday. The bedroom has a quirky floor level large window that can be opened for a blast of fresh air. Be careful, falling out would hurt.....................a lot. So no sleep walking allowed. All in all a wonderful place to stay. We hope to return later this year.

Total Escape
If you are looking to sample the England of films and literature this is the place. Splendid isolation amongst beautiful scenery. The barn is beautiful and so comfortable and cosy with every mod con. The hosts are kind and charming and not at all intrusive The nearby village of Widecombe on the Moor is picture postcard lovely while nearby Ashburton will meet every foodie’s needs. But shhhhh. Don’t tell everyone.

Fantastic cottage & wonderful hosts
Widecombe is ideally situated in the centre of Dartmoor National Park. You can easily explore the West of the moors (make sure to climb Brent Tor to visit St Michael of the Rock).Tavistock is a wonderful old market town. Castle Drogo and Finch Foundry are interesting places to visit on the Northern side of the park. Don't miss having Devon Cream Tea at the Wayside Cafe in Widecombe - it was great! Richard, Becks and the resident cats and dogs of Widecombe Cottage were wonderful. We will definitely visit again. PS: book a table at the Rugglestone Inn early to avoid missing out.

The Perfect Getaway for Two
This cottage was absolutely perfect for us. The owners, Richard and Becks, left nothing undone. The cottage was clean as a pin from top to bottom with all appliances furnished. We were greeted with fresh eggs and milk, and a sponge cake that was so delicious. Richard is a wood working master and has built much of what you see inside the cottage. The views are spectacular with farmland and animals everywhere. The owners are great hosts, always willing to answer any question you might ask. We changed our day plans based on their suggestions, and would have otherwise missed some real treasures. We only wish we had another week here in Widecombe!

About the neighbourhood
Lower Venton is part of a tiny hamlet, just off a sleepy country lane. Dartmoor ponies may be seen trotting past the gate, yet you are in easy reach of many of South Devon's attractions. There are moorland walks and cycle rides from the doorstep, the local stables offer treks for riders of all abilities and nearby Bonehill Rocks has some of the best bouldering in the country. A short stroll takes you to “The Rugglestone Inn”, serving real ale and a menu featuring locally sourced, home cooked food. Widecombe-In-the-Moor, is a further five-minute walk. There you can enjoy brunch or a cream tea at “The Cafe on the Green”, stock up at the village shop or relax over a pint at “The Old Inn”. We have all you could hope for in a country break.
Getting around
Dartmoor is 365 square miles of rugged, natural beauty and many areas of interest are remote so a car is the easiest way to get from place to place. Cycling is a wonderful way to enjoy the scenery but some areas are only accessible by walking - so stout shoes are a must!
