Dashel Cottage is a cosy converted stone barn at Dockwell Farm, a 400 year old Dartmoor longhouse. The accommodation is on three levels with French windows onto a terrace at the rear and a small enclosed garden (lawn). The 50 acre farm has cattle, horses, hens, geese, guinea fowl, dogs and cats. The farm is in a stewardship scheme with Natural England; four fields are designated as a County Wildlife Site for the variety of hay meadow species including orchids. The farm is surrounded by open moorland and rocky tors with extensive views and grazing cattle and sheep. The area is rich in history, with hut circles, burial chambers and ancient field boundaries. The deserted medieval settlement of Hutholes adjoins the farm. Dashel Cottage is ideally located for walking from the door - to the north to the high expanse of Hameldown including Grimspound, or south along the sheltered West Webburn valley which is a haven for flora and fauna. The village of Widecombe in the Moor, with its famous September Fair and two welcoming pubs, is one and a half miles away. The nearest towns for shopping are Ashburton and Bovey Tracey, both about 15 minutes' drive. Princetown, Chagford, Totnes, Dartmouth and Exeter are well worth visiting. The various South Devon coastal resorts are about an hour away. Dogs are welcome, and can be exercised on the enclosed farmland, but please check with us on the whereabouts of livestock first. Dogs need to be booked in and there is a charge of £10 a week per dog. Short breaks of less than a week are charged at 70% of the weekly rate. Dashel Cottage is centrally heated, has free wifi, and a Sky satellite box with Sky Sports package. Please note: The cottage no longer has a woodburning stove

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.

A Dartmoor Delight
Our 2nd stay in the area and Brimble Cottage provided a spacious, warm, quiet and comfortable base for our weekend break. Lovely hosts too. Fabulous location if you like to get away from it all but so much to explore from the door. We visited with our dogs and took them to Bellever Forest, plus a fantastic circular walk from Haytor Rocks to Hounds Tor and pretty Widecombe which we viewed from a walk to Bone Hill Rocks - stunning scenery wherever you look.

Hidden gem in deepest Dartmoor
We wanted a cosy, warm cottage in the middle of no-where which allowed us to take our two dogs with us and that is exactly what Dashel cottage offers. It is situated in a wonderful quiet location on a country lane surrounded by amazing scenery. Having said that it is only a short drive to reach local towns and amenities. The cottage itself is lovely and warm with everything you need for your stay and the welcoming owners are just next door. We couldn't have asked for more on a cold wet week in February.

Lovely warm cosy cottage, with friendly helpful owners and great surroundings. We even had snow for a few days.
Christmas 2017 we decided to spend near one of my sisters on Dartmoor, but needed a dog friendly cottage. Dashel looked ideal, and proved to be so. Quiet location, everything we needed in the cottage, including a real, decorated Christmas tree, lots of birds feeding in the garden, and enjoyed watching the guinea fowl wandering around. Unfortunately, I’d had a serious illness earlier in the year, but Venetia reassured me I’ll find Dashel manageable. I did, and felt better for making the effort. Our whole family, plus dogs, enjoyed a wonderful Christmas together. Would love to stay again. Grateful thanks to Norman and Venetia, and Good Wishes for 2018 to them both.

Perfect getaway
Had another lovely stay at dashel cottage. A warm welcome but never in your face. Widecombe is only a twenty minute walk (longer coming back uphill). Don't miss the walk from Jordan to Ponsworthy and see another side of Dartmoor, we usually go the extra (country) mile for lunch at the Tavistock Inn. Already booked for next year.

Beautiful Dartmoor barn conversion
Charming barn conversion in lovely location. We have stayed here four times and are booked again for next year. Cottages actually on the moor are rare. There are great walks straight from the cottage. The Rugglestone Inn in Widecombe is just too far to walk - and after one of their meals no way could one walk back

Lovely peaceful location and very welcoming owners
We've stayed at Brimble and Dashel Cottages a few times over the years and always had a lovely time. The cottage is pretty well set up and the owners' friendliness (to our aging dog as well as ourselves does make a difference). The only issues we had this time were 1) the firmness of the mattress on the double bed made it quite uncomfortable....although possibly that's just us getting old and 2) the still over-sensitive smoke alarm....using the toaster or doing any cooking required us to have both front and back doors open for fear of triggering it. Notwithstanding those niggles Dockwell is a delightful place to spend time and located very handily for the nicest parts of Dartmoor

Dear Martin, Many thanks for letting us know about a couple of issues. We are sorry that the mattress did not suit your preference, and will monitor the over-sensitive smoke alarm. It was good to see you again.

Gorgeous location, cosy cottage
Lovely cottage, beautifully situated just over the moor from Widecombe. Cosy sitting room/kitchen/diner downstairs - lovely log fire would be great in colder months no doubt! Has Sky freeview channels and decent wi-fi. Upstairs is large bathroom (could do with a shower screen fitting to bath though to avoid flooding!), decent sized double bedroom and on upper floor a further 2 single beds. Pet friendly too which was a bonus for us - there's a decent sized rear garden for the dog - just be aware that there are geese, hens, guinea-fowl on the farm roaming around so keep dogs under control. Overall a great place to stay - centrally located for days out etc. Definitely one to return to in the future!

Many thanks for your detailed review; we will definitely look into fitting a shower screen to the bath. Thanks for the suggestion.
