We are located up on top of the Coastal Range, above the National Park of Marino Ballena and Uvita beach, on the Pacific south west and 4 hrs drive from the capital San Jose. The road is rural and requires a 4X4 vehicle. The main access road is from the valley side of the ridge, it is paved up to 5 km and the rest is well gravelled.
What is a sustainable way of life?
Marga and Chema have been living a sustainable way of life for over 20 years and they would like to share it with you, even if it is just for a few days.
This way of life is much more economical and nature friendly, where arts and crafts predominate over mass consummerism; where walking, bicycling, horses and public transport is the form of transport, instead of the private car; where the use of energy is minimized and sustainably produced. But perhaps the most important is to grow as much of ones own food, since food is health and health is food.
To summarize, it is about quality of life instead of standard of living; it is about enhancing, empowering and a conscientious way of life. It is about sharing with family, friends and neigbours; to barter, to trade to be frugal and not to waste; which is true economy.
Marga and Chema have built their own house and furniture (Chema has been a cabinet maker and a carpenter). Marga is a seamstres and makes most of their clothes. Energy is sustainably produced and waste is minimized. They breed, raise and traine (the natural way) their own horses, a cross between andalusian and costarican paso fino; they also do all the animal husbandry, to include the maintenance of the fields and do their own farrier work.
The home is a large, two storied, round building. 5 bedrooms with their own bathrooms, a large living room with a fireplace, dinning room overlooking the tropical forest and the Pacific ocean, with a geodesic dome at the second floor for holistic exercises. Solar panels and candles for light.
The farm is located on top of the Coastal Range, on the south west of Costa Rica, sorrounded by tropical forests and the Biological Corredor 'El Paso de la Danta' (The Path of the Tapir). It has its own water springs which feed the house. Mountain trails arround the forest to the many waterfalls and down to the beach at Bahia Ballena National Park (a migrating destination twice a year for the humpback whales). A 12 km rural road conects us to the beach and national park (4 wheel drive, walking or horses) taxi services available.
We offer sustainable practice and holistic health semminars throughout the year, you may inquire about them. Also, our ecuestrian tours give you an insight to the regions way of life, which still uses the horse as a form of transport and if your visit coincides with the local villages festivities, one can join in the cabalcades, which are one of the main events.
Also the phylosofical conversations and story telling with Chema arround the fire place.
But perhaps the most distinguishing factor about our place, is Margas Kitchen; with its many different dishes, all naturally made. Some of the most popular dishers are the lasagna, the paella, spanish omelett, stuffed fowl, sushi, and many baked pasteries.
Our place is a mountain retreat for the artist, the mistic and the naturalis; it provides a haven to inspire, to reveal and to view nature with all its grandeur and splendor.

Arrival time is before 5:30 due to being in a wilderness area with no neighbours nearby. There are a maze of rural roads in which is easy to get lost at night.

About the neighbourhood
Our farm and home is up on top of the ridge of the Coastal Range, on the south west coast of the Pacific in Costa Rica. It is sorrounded by tropical forests and cascading rivers, the nearest village is 3 km away and the beach (National Marine Park of Marino Ballena) is 12 km by rural road (4X4 required). We have several water springs, one of which feed the house. It overlooks the ocean, to the west and the tall Tallamanca range, with the highest mountain in Costa Rica the Chirripo, to the east. A good place to observe nature, wild life and very good birding, since the farm is set at a mountain pass comming from the ocean low lands to the fertil valleys on the other side of the ridge. On the western border, an impresive scarpment of a 1000 mts, overlooks the tree tops of the tropical ...
