3 hours from Kona airport, 45 minutes from Hilo airport. 50 minutes to Volcano Park.
Sunlight and gentle tradewinds fill the charming Oliana Cottage, located in upscale Puna Beach Palisades. Walk to clothing optional black sand Kehena Beach. Away from the street on a 1/2 acre, the cottage is located behind the owner's house. Just minutes away from Kalapana, Kapoho, warm ponds, and tidepools. You can hear the waves crash against the cliffs.
It is a short hike down the cliff to the famous black sand clothes-optional Kehena beach. Swim with the dolphins or whale watch in season. Dine out at nearby Kalani or in Kalapana. 3 hours fro...

Oliana Guesthouse
This is a great little place to stay if you are looking for a laid back studio in a laid back part of paradise. The frogs are loud in the evening, but sometime in the night they turn off and the waves crashing on the rocks and sand are the perfect way to wake up. Babette is a wonderful hostess--she leaves you alone most of the time but she's always helpful with local knowledge and makes you feel like an extended part of her community. We love Puna and the Kalapana area, but it's probably not for everyone: we've stayed here many times and you have to be ready to embrace a little rain, an eclectic local culture (eclectic is an understatement sometimes) and being a long way from anywhere. But that's why we love it. The jungle isn't as popular as the white sand of Kona, but it's got another kind of charm, just like the Oliana Guesthouse. Expect to embrace the natural experience and you won't be disappointed.
It's not a 'granite countertops and hot tub' style place, but the essentials are all there: clean bed and towels, outdoor shower, mini-fridge, microwave and cooktop, toaster, coffee maker, blender etc. We bring bottled water but we always have what we need when we cook dinner etc. The walk outside is on cinder and the floor is colored concrete, so it's important to leave the shoes and slippas outside. Good Wi-Fi and while the cell phones don't work right in the room, we always got a signal about 5 minutes down the road around Kalapana.
If we stop on the way at Costco and the Hilo farmer's market (great prices for papaya and other local fruit--try the coconut drinks!), the expensive little store in Kalapana has always had us covered for anything we forget. Smoothies are good down there, too.
The lava might be spectacular or barely there, but we've rented bikes and ridden out to shorten the hike the last couple of years and found it worthwhile--just don't bother renting anything expensive, there are lots of vendors and none of the bikes are special. The snorkeling at the tide pools and coffee at Hilo Coffee Mill (on the way to Volcano) are also favorites in the area. Good Thai food and Long's Drug in Pahoa.
Highly recommend contacting Babette directly to reserve; she manages that well, is very responsive to emails and seems to cost a little less that way than going through some of the listing services.

Lovely, spotless, peaceful, very close to beaches, such a nice proprietor!
Babette is so nice and her place is lovely. Pretty, airy, and peaceful in a sort of lava garden. A good kitchen area. Just a block from the coast, and very short drive (and nice walk) to beaches, warm pools, tide pools with excellent, safe snorkeling, Easy drive to Pahoa. Very comfortable bed and lots of nice touches. Very tropical area, my favorite on Hawaii. I did not see a single mosquito, by the way. Perhaps because the area is breezy and well ventilated.
I wanted to stay 3 nights but she had only one available so found me another very good place very close by, what a gift to a weary traveler. Thank you, Babette!
(Pahoa is closest town, 13 miles away, nice drive, grocery stores, drug store, etc. Good restaurants - they are very nice inside.)

Relaxing island hideaway
A lovely guest cottage at a private residence. I enjoyed the location on Hawaii. Everything on this side of the island seemed very relaxing. There are not a lot of tourist activities nearby. I chose this rental as my main purpose for visiting the Big Island was to visit Volcanoes National Park. The cottage was clean and well maintained. It included lots of extras you would never get at a hotel or timeshare. In addition to all the kitchen items, there were beach towels, beach chairs, snorkeling gear and an ice chest in the unit. The owner was very nice and was there to greet me even though I arrived after 10:30 pm.

Clean, comfortable - and away from it all
My husband and I stayed at Babette's Oliana Cottage for three nights in early July and had a great time. It was exactly like the online photos and spotlessly clean (which I really appreciated) and the perfect spot for exploring Puna and the south east of the Big Island.
Even though it was a 45 min or so drive up to VNP, we loved being off the beaten track down in Kehena. If you're a light sleeper you may need to factor in is the noise from the Coqui frogs at night. Imagine *considerably loud crickets. However, as it's a constant noise, kinda like white noise, it didn't keep us awake. Otherwise, the surrounding bird song and peacefulness of the jungle during the day- especially during an early morning light rainfall- is gorgeous! One thing about the cottage is that there's no hand sink in the bathroom so you have to wash your hands and clean your teeth at the kitchen sink, but that wasn't a big deal. Just a bit odd.
The cottage is a five minute walk to Kehena Black Sand Beach which is totally worth checking out if you're up for the climb down to the sand. We met some nice locals there. They said the water conditions were mellow the day we were there, compared to how they can be most of the time. The break was still pretty intense and some people did get pounded trying to get out of the water.
Kalani, a nearby yoga retreat, serves a good value vegetarian breakfast buffet and sells snacks and coffees to go. It's just a few minutes drive east of the cottage on the scenic road to Kapoho and the tide pools area.

Serenade of rainforest frogs
We truly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It was clean, well-cared for and comfortable! Babette gave us advice but still left us to enjoy our privacy. The frogs, birds and geckos sang us to sleep each night. We feel in love with this area of the Big Island and ended up looking at real estate! Can't wait to call Babette our neighbor!

Cozy retreat in paradise!
Oliana Cottage is a cozy retreat in paradise! Great place to stay and explore the parks and beaches of Puna. The cottage is secluded, quiet and just a minute or two walk to Kehena Black Sands Beach.

Peacefully tranquil place
A simply wonderful stay in a lovely cottage. Manicured garden, attention to detail, and in a great location. The room was spotless, a nice comfy bed and the just exactly perfect shower. Babette is a charming hostess indeed.
The best place to stay in this area, walk to the Kehena Black sand beach.
No reason to search any more, this is the best value.

Nice base for your vacation
The guesthouse was very nice. I missed that it was only a studio, but we really didn't need more space. It would not suit a family, only solo or couple. This was a great place to eat breakfast and dinner, if you desire, and it worked fine as a base of operations for day trips. It is not centrally located. You probably wouldn't spend more than a day nearby. A place closer to Hilo or central Pahoa would be much more efficient. However it was a beautiful drive to and from our "home" each day.

This area does not have cell service and many people do not have GPS either. So please make note of the directions sent to you in an email. From Hilo, take Highway 130 past Pahoa to Kalapana. Turn left at the stop sign on Kalapana-Kapoho Beach Road (Highway 137). Go 3.6 miles (past the top of Kehena Beach). Turn left on Oliana. Go past intersection with Punakai Street. Next house on right is 12 -124 Oliana. The cottage is behind the main house.
