Hopkins is just eight miles south of Dangriga, 20 minutes off the Southern highway, is the quaint and quiet fishing village of Hopkins. The road trip in will give you a great chance to spot the regal jabiru stork and other interesting birds that frequent the marshy landscape surrounding the village.
Spread across nearly five miles of a sandy, palm-strewn inlet, Hopkins is home to about a thousand Garifuna fishing and farming families. Time moves like a turtle. The Garifuna language is also widely spoken throughout the village.
In a vehicle? From Belize City, drive 52 miles to Belmopan via Western Highway, continuing past the monument in Belmopan and travel south along the well-marked highway for 56 mile cutoff which conncect the Hummingbird Highway with the Southern Highway, turn right. About 15 miles later you will see a turn off for Hopkins Village. Turn left, and four miles later you will be at the village crossroads. From there you can turn north to the left or south to the right.
By Bus, take the bus from Belize City to Dangriga. This takes about 2 ½ - 3 hours. In Dangriga change buses again, and get on the Hopkins bus. One bus leaves at 12 and the other leaves at 5 pm.
Hopkins is nearly five miles long so it is most convenient to get around on foot or bicycle. Its close proximity to the sea also makes it a nice place to relax or take an evening seaside stroll. By walking, you also get a chance to interact with the locals and experience a different side of Hopkins.

Palmento Grove Cultural & Fishing Lodge is located on the north end of Hopkins, From the Hopkins welcome sign located behind the Police Station follow the many Palmento Grove signs in the village that will lead you to the Freshwater Lagoonside. Hosted on 62 Acres of land surrounded by lagoons and a very scenic view of the Maya Mountains we are just 5 minute walk from the Caribbean Sea, 15 minutes biking to the business center where stores & restaurants are and 15 walk to the nearest bus pickup point.
