About the neighbourhood
As well as easily viewed landscapes of Wester Ross, Gairloch and Aultbea also has some of the most remote and wild (and roadless) land in all of the UK, notably north and west of Loch Maree Aside from the impact of the landscape, there is also plenty to see. There are gardens at Attadale near Lochcarron, while Inverewe, north of Gairloch, has been a place of pilgrimage for generations of gardeners who come to wonder at the range of tender species which thrive in the mild climate. The human story of the area is told in museums such as the Smithy Heritage Centre in Lochcarron, the Gairloch Heritage Museum and the Ullapool Museum and Visitor Centre Things to do in the area include (obviously) walking and climbing, with the Torridon Countryside Centre (NTS) or Scottish Natural Heritage's Bei...
How to get there
A twenty-minute drive over the headland from Gairloch takes you to the little village of Poolewe on the sheltered south side of Loch Ewe where the River Ewe rushes down from Loch Maree.Across the bay from Poolewe are the famous Inverewe Gardens, designed and planted by Osgood Mackenzie. Carry on along the coast for another 5 miles and you will come to the small village of Aultbea and then onto Mellon Charles at the head of the loch. The local airport is in Inverness which is 85 miles from Shore CroftA car is essential.
