Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Basic is right.
I fully endorse the previous visitor’s review. Not only is the cottage itself very basic, it has a myriad of small annoyances to make your stay uncomfortable. It is situated opposite a dairy farm, to which we had no objection, we live in the countryside and are used to the smell of cows, but not to the smell of a septic tank, which became gradually more apparent during our stay. The kitchen is sadly in need of an update, with a drawer off its runners and handles broken, few utensils, such as baking trays and other items we take for granted, and we spent our first day in Leyburn in the local hardware store, merely getting essentials. This is not what you expect when renting a cottage. All the lighting was of the energy-saving type and it was not possible to read by it after dark. We had to bring dining chairs into the bedroom in order to have something on which to put our night-time essentials because there were no bedside tables. The bathroom had been recently updated, although someone had removed the pop-up waste from the basin. If we hadn’t had several outings and meals booked on the area, which is spectacular, we would have been ready to return home very soon after our arrival.

Very overpriced
The cottage is small and very basic. Faded plastic flowers welcomed me when I arrived, as did a broken kitchen drawer and drawer handles. There was nothing welcoming about the lack of basic supplies - no salt, no oil, a few tea bags and a tiny amount of coffee and sugar left by the previous guests. On the positive side, the appliances do work, the bathroom is clean and spacious and the bed is comfy. Contrary to what the description says, Barden is not a pretty hamlet. It has a few pretty cottages (not this one) but it is totally dominated by a dairy farm which is what you see from the window and the front gate. There is a small village green with a bench in front of the cottages where you would not want to sit because of the smell and the thousands of flies. The day after I arrived several carcases of dead birds appeared around the green which lay there for several days. The road which runs in front of the green is effectively part of the farmyard. There is no CD player or DVD player. There is no terrestrial TV 'because a fire on Yorkshire Moor has destroyed the mast'. There is a 'ROKU' which gets Netflix and Prime TV amongst other subscription channels. The back garden is very charming but you can't get to it without having to run the gauntlet of the flies swarming around the front door and the bins the by the front path. Once you get there it is lovely but if you forget to take something out there with you you have to go all the way back to the front door, performing a complicated manoevre in the tiny front porch so that no flies come into the living room. There is no doubt that the cottage is within striking distance of many lovely places and if you want to spend the days away hiking and only come back to cook a meal, roll into bed and go out again the next day then it is an adequate shelter and place to cook food, but not a place to hang out during the day reading, sunbathing, listening to music, and surely not worth £97 a night!!
