About the neighbourhood
Symonds Yat is a hamlet steeped in history, named after Robert Symonds, a County Sheriff in the 17th century. The name ‘Yat’ means Gate, and hence the name of the cottage.

Straddling the River Wye in England, it is a popular destination for fishing, walking, canoeing, cycling, and climbling. Symonds Yat is also ideal for a quiet and relaxing break or a place to bring a young family.

Famed for its natural river scenery and wooded expanses, Symonds Yat Rock is a limestone outcrop rising some 500 feet from the banks of the river.

Archaeological finds include Mammoth and Sabre Tooth Tiger bones. At nearby King Arthur’s cave, discoveries confirm Man’s presence some 20,000 years ago. More recently, the New Weir Iron Works, used between 1590s and 1800s, was excavated.

Getting around
The Cottage is in a quiet location yet only 5 minutes drive from the A40 with easy links to M4 and M50 motorways. Ross on Wye and Monmouth are about 10-15 minutes drive and there is a local shop a few minutes drive at Whitchurch. Local attractions including a number of good pubs, where food is served, are within easy walking distance and there are a number of paths, public foot paths, lanes and cycle tracks to enjoy. The ancient Symonds Yat hand ferry across the Wye is operated by the Saracens Head pub and is an easy and interesting way to cross over the Symonds Yat East and Yat Rock. Railway: Ross on Wye: 12.0 km
Ferry: Avonmouth: 60.0 km
Symonds Yat West is easy to find off the A40, 8 miles south of Ross-on-Wye or 5 miles north of Monmouth.

From the A40, take the exit with a brown heritage sign marked Symonds Yat West and Hedge Puzzle. Go over the first roundabout and pass Whitchurch School on the left. Follow the road to the right and pass The Wyenot Inn on the right. The road will become a single track lane. At The Ye Olde Ferrie Inne, bear slightly right and pass the Paddock Hotel but do not take Wye View Lane on the right. As the lane heads down towards the river, it becomes very steep and narrow. Shortly afterwards, the private entrance to Wye Rapids Cottages will be on your right. Enter the gravel drive. The cottage is the 4th house from the end and the designated parking is numbered and directly opposite the house....
