Not being one that is impressed with the Dolce Vita lifestyle of the overly rich I was sceptical of a visit to the lake and Bellagio. The real working arm of the lake is the east arm. I based myself in an Airbnb apartment in Mandello del Lario (home of Motto Guzzi) . The apartment was in an old winery and could have been a Felini set. Nothing had changed since the 20's. From Mandell you can travel by train or ferries hourly to all parts of the lake. Bellagio is a short ride away. The nicest aspect of Mandello is that is a living /working village with local prices. I am Mr Tightwad and don't like to pay tourist prices. Caffes are 0.80E and an artisanal pizza 5E. Those are prices I can't get in the US. Even in Bellagio if you climb the hill to the streets without tour leaders with curious things on tall sticks the prices are the same.
