Le Roche Bernard is a lovely part of the world and well worth a visit, made even better by the warm welcome from Roy & Alison. The accommodation is perfectly located to restaurants and the port and also a great base to explore further afield....More

About the neighbourhood
La Roche Bernard is one of the jewels of Southern Brittany. The town has the accolade of 'Petit Cite de Caractere' Typically Breton in architecture it has lots of nice shops and restuarants including a Michelin starred restaurant a short walk from Les Huniers. The old town is a warren of tiny streets and quaint old buildings together with some fantastic views of the Vilaine estuary. Below the old town at river level is the Vieux Port with its charm and a host of restaurants and bars. You can sit on the terrace of the bars and watch the sun go down. One of life's great pleasures. All of this is within a few paces of the gite, unlike many gites and villas which are advertised as ' La Roche Bernard' but are really several kms from the town, Les Huniers has a great location in La Roche Bernard and therefore a host of local amenities are within a short walk. You can leave the car and walk to the shops and the many restaurants and bars Boating La Roche Bernard is great for sailing and boating enthusiasts. The old port hosts an Old Gaffers Association and there are frequent nautical events during the summer. There is a sailing school and canoes and pleasure craft can be hired as well as several marinas. Gastronomy There are about a dozen restaurants within easy walking distance of Les Huniers including a Michelin Star restaurant. As well as the local seafood numerous other delicacies abound - proof that Brittany doesn't have to be crepes with everything. There are 3 charcuterie traiteurs in La Roche, including an award winner, that provide wonderful, freshly prepared treats and meals that you can eat in the comfort of Les Huniers Walking After all that gastronomy you may feel the need to walk a bit off! Numerous walks around the town and the Vieux Port together with signposted walks in and around the local countryside and river Golf There are several golf courses in the region from the 9 hole course (with par 5 holes and lakes) at Caden to the famous national course of La Bretesche in the grounds of a chateau at Missillac. Beaches There are many beaches, the nearest is a lovely sandy beach with a typically rocky backdrop at Penestin about 15mins by car. Fishing Sea fishing along the coast or freshwater in the Vilaine or lakes . The Vilaine was the venue for the world fishing championships in 2006. It has a no kill policy. Boat trips Boat trips leave from La Roche Bernard and go down to the dam at Arzal or up river towards Redon. Dinner and Lunch cruises are available. Grande Briere National Park Have a guided tour or hire a punt yourself and explore the second largest wetland in France (after The Camargue). Wildlife There is an enormous variety of wildlife. You can see finches, wrens, robins, sparrows swallows, house martins, kingfishers, black kites, marsh-harriers, egrets, warblers, woodpeckers, nuthatches, tree-creepers, goldcrests, turtle doves and hoopoes as well as owls, buzzards, kites, sparrowhawks, merlins and kestrels. Lizards run around including the salamander, there are deer, wild boar, pine martins and red squirrels. The Grande Briere National Park is the second largest wetland in France and you can hire punts to explore the back waters Other Attractions nearby There is enough to do in and around La Roche Bernard to keep most people happy, but if you want to travel further afield here are some suggestions Golfe du Morbihan an inland sea bejewelled with a myriad of tiny islands, some of which are big enough for a single house. It is said that there is an island for each day of the year. One of the most beautiful spots in France Vannes and Auray both on the edge of the Golfe du Morbihan have pretty old town areas St.Nazaire Visit the the old submarine pens of the second world war, take a tour of a submarine, or book a visit to the shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique the birthplace of the Queen Mary 2. Museum of the Breton Resistance - at St. Marcel, Malestroit, on the site of a battle in June 1944 in which the Breton Resistance with free French forces parachuted in from England, successfully diverted the local German troops from the Normandy Landings. Yves Rocher Vegetarium and factory - at La Gacilly. This is where the beauty products empire has its roots. Yves Rocher has been the Mayor of La Gacilly since the 1950's, and is the patron of this pretty village crammed with artisan's shops. There are also - Go-karting, paintballing, adventure parks, swimming pools
