About the neighbourhood
At a population of around 600, Balivanich is the largest village in the Southern Isles of the Outer Hebrides. Not exactly huge by urban standards, it does however contain every amenity most people would need, from supermarkets to baker, hospital to school, bank to post office, restaurant to take away. There are also gift shops for visitors as well as the practicalities of the local hardware store. Centrally located in the Southern Isles, Balivanich benefits from an airport and retains a military presence serving the missile testing facility in South Uist. Most the military homes, including those at Winfield Way were built by the MoD before being sold to the public in the late 1990s.
Getting around
Public transport does exist with a bus service running the length of the islands daily until early evening. But unless you are a keen cyclist (and there are many who visit the islands every year) it is essential to have a car to get around. (There are also taxis for those who would like to visit the local watering holes to let their hair down of an evening!). For bus timetables, visit the local authority website (cne-siar dot gov dot uk) or pick up a timetable at the post office or tourist shops. If you happen to be out for a walk, don't be surprised if one of the locals stops to offer you a lift - we're friendly folk in the Hebrides!
