Wonderful village house, preserved with love and fully functional
Persephone House is located in the mountain village called Anatoli, approx. 25 minutes drive away from the city of Ierapetra and the beaches. The moment I saw pictures on TripAdvisor, I wanted to rent it and this cozy house did not disappoint me. It is kept in the original village style, but clients would not miss the benefits of the modern and fully equipped kitchen and bathrooms. The house has good working air-conditioning system, immaculate hot water supply, very modern washing machine and steam ironing station. I know, being on vacation you would not admire such thing such as a good ironing equipment, but it is a detail (among many others) that shows how much Ioanna, wonderful and thoughtful owner of the house, cares about her clients.
I loved old furniture and how a separé on the second level was integrated into the original design of the house. Little patio on the ground level spends shadow and we often had our coffee there when the temperatures were too hot to be on the beautiful rooftop terrace (often we would take our sundown drinks and enjoy the lovely view above the village roofs and the sea) I appreciated the beauty of the little garden, created of the numerous potted plants around the outside area.
Sleeping is indicated as possible for 8 people, but it is necessary to keep in mind that it must be 4 pairs. At the beginning I was a little skeptical about 8 people staying in such seemingly small house, but we all easily managed to distribute ourselves everywhere around the rooms and terraces on many chairs, cushions and sofas. Three toilets and two showers are perfectly enough for group of 8.
As a host, Ioanna was extremely fast in communication with me, which I appreciated a huge lot. She helped me with organizing a birthday party for my husband, answered my uncountable messages and checked on the possible locations for our birthday dinner personally!!!!! It is something far beyond the service you would expect from a host of a usual vacation rental place. We invited 25 people to join us for a drink party on the terrace and even this was possible, manageable and fun.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH IOANNA for being so helpful and for all your effort to make our stay in your house so wonderful. It was a vacation to remember.

Fantastic property with stunning views
This property is beautifully renovated in traditional style with modern amenities. The views from the terraces are spectacular at any time of the day (breakfast on the main terrace was a particular favourite for me). We thought it was ideal for 4 people (we were only 2 so had plenty of room). Anatoli is a village with a lot of old abandoned houses but we could see renovations starting to spread, some are truly beautiful already. Ioannis and Vassilli are the lovely owners and arrived from Athens half way through our holiday, to stay in another of their properties in Anatoli. We went out to dinner with them to a fabulous taverna a few km away in the mountains near Males, and they even invited us to a meal on their terrace one evening. Persephone House is a lovely place to stay and we would be more than happy to return here.

About the neighbourhood
The village of ANATOLI holds its written history from Venetian times, although Byzantine chapels, in and around it, denote a much earlier origin. It has retained its medieval architectural character and its rich natural environment, while it is at close distance to some of the most beautiful, sandy, blue flag beaches of southeastern Crete. At 600m altitude it captures fantastic views to the sea while being surrounded by the olive groves, typical of the Cretan landscape, gigantic rock formations and natural spring waters. There is a local family tavern with very good inexpensive food and a mini market, while several other taverns exist at the neighboring villages, the one at Agia Paraskevi being exceptional. At 12 km the city of IERAPETRA offers all facilities and activities of a big city (shops, supermarkets, banks, doctors, water front esplanade with restaurants and cafes, archaeological Collection, organized beach etc),while the cosmopolitan city of AGIOS NICOLAOS (capital of the prefecture) is just at 20km
Daily cultural excursions to archaeological sites, Byzantine and Venetian monuments, churches and chapels and natural places of outstanding beauty can be combined with swimming to these beautiful beaches, all supported by picturesque taverns.
WHERE TO SWIM: Sandy beaches extend either to the northeast (the gulf of Mirabello), or to the southeast (Libyan Sea). At Kalo Chorio (ancient site “Istron”) are found two of the most famous beaches of Crete with azure waters, “VOULISMA” and “AGIOS PANTELEIMON”, while east of Ierapetra extend kilometers of sandy beaches and small sea gulfs, among which the best are AGIA GALINI (next is Kakkos Bay Hotel, laid out in another beautiful gulf and open to the public), AGIA FOTIA, FERMA, PSAROPOULA (with an excellent fish tavern, next to Kakkos Bay hotel), ACHLIA etc.
On the other west side of Ierapetra the village of MYRTOS offers also a beautiful, sandy beach. Beyond Myrtos extend very interesting, isolated places to swim, up to KERATOCAMPOS.
You should not miss a day trip to CHRISSI ISLAND (the Golden Sand beach), the most renowned beach island - a natural sanctuary . Natural environment of exceptional beauty, beach with sand and azure waters . Boat schedules from the port of Ierapetra.
SIGHTSEEING:This part of Crete has some of the most renowned monuments you should not miss on your first visit, together with others, representatives of the rich island’ s history..
Archaeological sites is ZAKROS (the fourth palatine site of Minoan Crete) set in beautiful landscape with the seashore picturesque village of Nea Zakros, for swimming and eating.
HELLENISTIC CITY OF LATO flourished during classical and Hellenistic periods, is located on the outskirts of Agios Nicolaos, where you can admire the model of planning of an archaic Greek city, also recognizable in Roman cities, and depicted, as prevailing idea in cities through ages (ex. Regency Street, London as an attractive city spine with monuments and economic activities).
On the way to Lato, stop at the Byzantine Church of PANAGIA KERA considered a unique monument of its kind in Crete, all frescoed from 13th to 14th century, depicting the techniques towards renaissance, before the style was transferred to the West with the fall of Constantinople.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES OF GOURNIA and MALLIA
MONI TOPLOU, frescoed medieval monastery dating from the 14th century, and important castle stronghold during Venetian times. From there you can swim in VAI BAY one of the most famous shores of Crete, with fine sand and Palm trees, and visit ITANOS, the last eastern city of Minoan times, with ideal port location for exchanges with Anatolia and Egypt.
The PSYCHRO or DIKTAION CAVE is an impressive cave and archaeological site, located at the Lassithi Plateau, near the village of Psychro. It contains a Minoan to Archaic period sanctuary of Zeus, who according to mythology was born there, before being taken to the Ideon Cave and nurtured by the goat Amaltheia. A 15 min stepped walkway or donkey ride will bring you to the entrance of the cave, while it is worth visiting some of the villages of the Plateau, like St. George, St. Constantine and also Psychro.
MILATOS CAVE- a very interesting perplex cave, now a place of memory, where 3000 locals took refuge during Turkish occupation, to be executed after its seize.
MATALA CAVES-very famous place, ideal for swimming
SPINALOGA CASTLE ISLAND from Venetian times, now an open air museum .
For nature lovers don't miss an excursion to the Gorges of SARAKINA (between the villages of Anatoli and Malles) and KRITSA, the forest of SELAKANO (west of Anatoli). In Anatoli 3 walking paths start from different points of the village-marked with signs and charts- leading to the fields of the locals, that used to cultivate till recently, and with miniature chapels for their protection and worship while working there. All walking paths pass through landscapes of natural beauty.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUMS-COLLECTIONS OF AGIOS NICOLAOS (important) and IERAPETRA (a collection of sarcophagus only but worth visiting.

How to get there
There are two ways to reach ANATOLI from the city of Heraklion, the capital of the island. The route is common up to the Istron or Kalo Chorio.
Upon arrival at Heraklion you follow signs towards AGIOS NICOLAOS. Just outside the city of Agios Nicolaos there is a right turn towards IERAPETRA.
ROUTE I- (Heraklion – Anatoli via Kalo Chorio/Prina/Kalamafka)
8 km after you left behind Agios Nikolaos you are at the entrance of the village Kalo Chorio (ancient site of Istron). Leave the auto route and take a right turn at the sign pointing towards Prina/Kalamafka/Males (villages before and after Anatoli). This is a country road, very picturesque, with slight turns and slops and is narrower than the autoroute.
You pass through the first two villages with signs showing directions. At Kalamafka there is a junction with left turn- sign towards Ierapetra- and right turn towards Anatoli. At about 6 km you arrive at Anatoli. You have reached Anatoli from the higher road, most of the village and all of Dorovinis Houses are at your left hand side.
At the second crossroad to your left you will see the first sign of Dorovinis Houses pointing towards
SMARAGDA HOUSE : Park your car on widenings of the main road and follow the walkway. At about 50m you reach the main market street. Turn right and you will see the two houses SMARAGDA to your left and PERSEPHONE to your right.
.
Route II - (Heraklion-Anatoli via Ierapetra)
Autoroute from Heraklion - Agios Nikolaos-Ierapetra
After passing the village of Pahia Ammos (seaside village) there is a big junction with right turn towards IERAPETRA. 12 km of straight road you see signs informing that you are approaching IERAPETRA. You reach Ierapetra and you find yourself just outside the city in a junction with street lights. If you continue straight you will enter the city, to the left you go to Sitia and to the right you go towards Vianos-Myrtos-Gra Lygia. You take this direction (right turn) and you are at the ring road of Ierapetra doing a quarter of a circle around the city. At the end of the ring road you meet at your right the supermarket CARREFOUR-MARINOPOULOS you can only make a right turn with signs again repeating towards Myrtos-Viannos-Gra Lygia. You turn right and you continue straight towards west of Ierapetra (you leave the city behind) and to your left there is the sea.
At about 4,5 Km you will meet on your left hand side a big supermarket ARIADNE and a little further a slightly diagonal road to your right, marked by a pharmacy shop and cross sign to your left. You take this right turn that will take to Anatoli passing from the village KALOGERI. At about 500m there is V junction you keep to the left and continue straight ahead. After 8km you will first see Anatoli hanging in a slop. You are at the bottom of the village, on the main road, and the village is hanging on your right.
At about 500 m after you have first seen the village you will see a big, abandoned building on your right side-the old olive oil refinery-and to your left a red sign pointing right turn towards PASIPHAE HOUSE
You continue on the main road past the old refinery and now you are taking a loop around and out of the village. You are ascending and at the end of the loop you reach a small square with signs. Left turn leads to the next village of Malles, so you take a right turn and you are at the top part of the village. You cross the village and just before the end you will meet the second sign of Dorovinis Houses pointing right towards SMARAGDA HOUSE Park your car on any widening of the main road and follow the walkway. At about 50m you reach the old market street and to your right the houses of SMARAGDA and PERSEPHONE.
