An ancient town of Roman origin, founded in the time of the Samnite wars in 312 BC, Pignataro Interamna owes its name to the vast presence of pine trees (pignataro) and to its position between the two rivers (inter amnes), Liri and Rio Spalla Bassa. The site features archaeological excavations promoted by the Superintendency of Lazio and Southern Etruria with the collaboration of the University of Cambridge.
