Glencoldon Cottage is in the Osprey Village of Boat of Garten, 6 miles from Aviemore, in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. It is ideal for 4-6 people and has a Green Tourism Gold Award for its many eco-friendly features and large 'wild' garden, which welcomes a huge diversity of local wildlife. The village is on the River Spey between Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey. It is ideally situated for easy access to the huge range of attractions and outdoor activities that the area is famous for; from walking and watersports, to mountain adventures and whisky-tasting. A full upgrade to low-carbon and modern high-spec was completed in 2017, and, in 2022, enhanced with additional solar systems, EV charging and remaining fossil fuel system removal. So, you can perhaps even travel the National Park on sun power! As the cottage garden opens onto the Speyside Way, we have also made sure all the facilities are available to make it fully cycle-friendly too, from providing a secure bike shelter and basic tools, to easy clothes washing and drying. There is a huge variety of tracks around Strathspey and the National Park, many accessible from Boat of Garten. As a natural wildlife haven, the spacious balcony deck area, with views to the Cairngorms, allows you to fully immerse in your tranquil surroundings, and enjoy the visits of the local (+ resident!) red squirrels, deer, rabbits and bats, and a huge range of birds - all the wildlife of this stunning area! The large child-friendly wild garden has direct gate access to the forest behind the cottage (with many local walks and scenic routes to the shops) and opens to the 65-mile Speyside Way to the front (running alongside the famous Strathspey Steam Railway – you can see this running past several times a day! [Feb-Oct]). The garden is partly an extension of the surrounding forest and partly an area where you can enjoy a barbeque, or a game of volleyball, badminton or mini-football on the small lawn. There are no hidden extra costs, with all heat, power, EV charging and log usage for the wood burning stove, included in the hire.

Interaction with guestsWhat I love most when arriving at the cottage is the instant tranquillity! As this is one of the reasons many people visit the Cairngorms too, we decided we would not divert guests from starting to unwind with a big welcome - we thought we should just make sure they have all they need to quickly make themselves at home. However, we are more than happy to share our local knowledge. I was lucky enough to grow up at the cottage, so I have enjoyed all the local highlights for 50+ years; and know all the great places to go with children, having taken my own not so long ago. Many people come with their own adventure planned; for others, though, we provide info on local favourites and leave you many ways to get in touch if you need any help.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.

Wonderful escape in nature
Had a fantastic stay at Derek's cottage, Glencoldon. The cottage was very comfortable, spacious and lots of very thoughtful touches, not to mention the stunning views. The garden was generous and exciting to explore for the children with access to the lovely forest at the rear. My children didn't want to leave (neither did the adults)!

Thanks very much for staying and the kind review. So good your children enjoyed the wild garden so much - I spent my childhood exploring it too, and still find it hard to leave! You're all very welcome back anytime, including the grown ups!

Fabulous cottage
Our family including 2 young kids loved this house. The views and quiet surroundings were great. The fire was a huge hit; and we loved the cleanliness and the lovely interior. Derek was a great host. We will definitely be back and would highly recommend!!

Prrfect location on edge of forest
Perfectly located on the edge of the forest, the cottage was warm and comfortable. Able to cycle to the shop for newspapers and messages but also able to access the forest for walking and cycling daily. Very quiet place near the end of the village and the garden was great for children to explore. Clean on arrival and well aired for our use. Would definitely return!

Thank you for your feedback. Pleased that you noted cleanliness of the cottage. As covid numbers increase, we're trying hard to maintain the extra effort on cleaning an sanitising. Great that your children discovered the joys of the wild garden - we like to just let nature take its course wherever we can! All the best until you might return!

Excellent family cottage
Absolutely brilliant stay here. Cottage is fantastic. Homely and has everything you might need for a wonderful stay like ours. Garden is great for hide and seek / or return to base game that we played with our older kids. Enjoyed watching the baby rabbits playing, the bats, owls and even saw a deer on the drive one evening too! So much to see and do in this area and for us as a family that loves being outdoors but with home comforts this cottage was ideal! We really loved it here and will definitely come back and look to stay here again. Thank you Derek!

Thank you! Much appreciate your booking and detailed very positive review. I'd be interested where you saw the owls, as I haven't seen one for a while myself (although hear them!). The deer is a regular visitor, and sometimes is the first thing to greet our new guests! Pleased you all enjoyed so much. All the best, until wee maybe see you again! Kindest regards, derek

Wonderful stay in the Highlands!
I stayed with my daughter, son in law and their two children aged 3 and 9. The accommodation could not have been more suitable for our needs. The house is extremely well presented, spacious and nicely decorated throughout. The bedrooms are a good size, the living and dining room space is so well laid out and the kitchen is excellent. Parking space for two large cars no problem. The children loved exploring the garden and it couldn't be situated in a nicer spot. The village shop and hotel are a short walk away and both are excellent. This is an ideal spot to stay if you want to explore the surrounding area. We had a fantastic holiday and will definitely be booking again. Highly recommend.

Thanks so much for such a comprehensive and positive review, from the decor to the local hotel! Especially pleased your grandchildren enjoyed exploring the wild garden, as we think the closeness to wildlife and the accessibility of the cottage to many walks and cycle rides to wild places, is one of the unique features. All the best!

Amazingly clean and COVID safe
Very, very tidy and clean, felt totally safe and homely/cozy at the same time. The house was minimised in it’s equipment to fit COVID rules and make it safer and easier to clean, which felt good and still left us with everything we needed. We were there with two toddlers and enjoyed both house and surrounding very much! It’s location is perfect too. Did lots of adverntures right from the door, on bikes and by foot... and not to forget the steamtrain! We would definitely book again; we felt welcomed, comfortable and happy! All one needs for a successful holiday.

Brilliant! So pleased that your holiday was a success and you were able to enjoy some of the many adventures available in the area. And very happy too that you were able to feel cosy and comfortable, even although we have had to remove some things to help enable best cleaning and sanitising between guests every time. Hope we might see you again!

About the neighbourhood
Glencoldon Cottage is a short 10-15 min walk along the Speyside Way (Kinchurdy Road) to a variety of village amenities (2 shops, hotel, restaurant, steam train station, bus stops, etc.). The village lies six miles north east of Aviemore. For wider exploring, perhaps up through the world renowned whisky trail, over towards the Great Glen or exploring the Moray Firth and Black Isle, Boat-of-Garten is well placed just off the national rail and road network (A9, A95).
