Glencoldon Cottage is in the Osprey Village of Boat of Garten, 6 miles from Aviemore, in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. It is ideal for 4-6 people and has a Green Tourism Gold Award for its many eco-friendly features and large 'wild' garden, which welcomes a huge diversity of local wildlife. The village is on the River Spey between Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey. It is ideally situated for easy access to the huge range of attractions and outdoor activities that the area is famous for; from walking and watersports, to mountain adventures and whisky-tasting. So, you can perhaps even travel the National Park on sun power! As the cottage garden opens onto the Speyside Way, we have also made sure all the facilities are available to make it fully cycle-friendly too, from providing a secure bike shelter and basic tools, to easy clothes washing and drying. There is a huge variety of tracks around Strathspey and the National Park, many accessible from Boat of Garten. As a natural wildlife haven, the spacious balcony deck area, with views to the Cairngorms, allows you to fully immerse in your tranquil surroundings, and enjoy the visits of the local (+ resident!) red squirrels, deer, rabbits and bats, and a huge range of birds - all the wildlife of this stunning area! The large child-friendly wild garden has direct gate access to the forest behind the cottage (with many local walks and scenic routes to the shops) and opens to the 65-mile Speyside Way to the front (running alongside the famous Strathspey Steam Railway – you can see this running past several times a day! [Feb-Oct]). The garden is partly an extension of the surrounding forest and partly an area where you can enjoy a barbeque, or a game of volleyball, badminton or mini-football on the small lawn. There are no hidden extra costs, with all heat, power, EV charging and log usage for the wood burning stove, included in the hire. Interaction with guestsWhat I love most when arriving at the cottage is the instant tranquillity! As this is one of the reasons many people visit the Cairngorms too, we decided we would not divert guests from starting to unwind with a big welcome - we thought we should just make sure they have all they need to quickly make themselves at home. However, we are more than happy to share our local knowledge. I was lucky enough to grow up at the cottage, so I have enjoyed all the local highlights for 50+ years; and know all the great places to go with children, having taken my own not so long ago. Many people come with their own adventure planned; for others, though, we provide info on local favourites and leave you many ways to get in touch if you need any help.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Great cottage in a lovely location
Really enjoyed our stay here and can recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday in the area or just as a base to go out an explore this beautiful part of Scotland. The cottage is very well equipped and had everything we needed. The garden is great fun for children to explore, but safe and contained. Loved our stay here, hopefully we will be back.

Thanks so much for your feedback. Great to know that kids are enjoying a bit of adventure in the garden! Maybe even more hiding places now than when I was roaming as a kid. I hope you will be back too! All the best, Derek

Another great New Year getaway
Fantastic place to relax and get back to nature after all the excitement of Xmas. Spacious and cosy house in the forest is pretty much perfect. Long walks and cycles from the door and Aviemore close enough if wanting a bit more social interaction! Lots of wildlife around and we were lucky enough to see a capercaillie on our New Year’s Day hike round Loch Vaa Thanks to Derek the owner for making sure everything was as it should be and being available had there been problems, looking forward to a return visit. .

Brilliant! Very pleased you enjoyed your return to the cottage. You did very well to see one of the many, but very elusive, Capercaillie! Winter definitely has its own special attraction in the National Park. All the best for 2020!

The great green getaway
Boat of Garden is a lovely area and my wife and I have been through it before but never stayed. We know the owner and he'd told us so much about the place that we had to go and stay. Glencoldon Cottage is along a quiet road that starts opposite the Post Office/village shop (which is very handy!). It's been refurbished to a very high standard with lots of environmentally friendly features (Green Tourism Gold Award). Everything is so well designed and well thought out that it made for a really great weekend. There were really clear instructions on how everything works so we didn't waste any time and could fully enjoy the peace and quiet. There's so many walks straight from the cottage to the river Spey, as well as lochs and forests. It's genuinely the best cottage we've ever rented.

and relax....
This cottage exceeded our expectations. So spacious for the 4 of us, cozy and spotlessly clean. Great location. We didn't bring the car and didn't regret it. Hope to be back soon. Highly recommended and a great host.

Brilliant
We were very impressed with this holiday home. One of the best we've seen. Boat of Garten is a charming village and we've been here a few times before but never in a place as nice as this. Beautiful tasteful furnishings throughout and well stocked for our every need. We'll definitely be back!

Fantastic cottage for family holiday in idyllic location
Booked at the last minute for a long weekend with our young family. The cottage was well equipped and clean and so quiet! A safe environment and interesting garden for the little ones to explore. Wildlife in the garden included deer, red squirrel and woodpecker. The area has so much to offer for families. We cycled along the Strathspey way to Aviemore and took the steam train to Broomhill then cycled home. Bikes taken in the guards van. Landmark centre and highland wildlife park offered great days out too. And if course some of the most fantastic countryside on the doorstep for walks. Pine forests, lochs and the river Spey all within walking distance. I was very lucky to come across three Pine Martin on an early morning cycle just the other side of the village. All in all the best family holiday we have had!

Great to hear you had an enjoyable stay and a great holiday! The woodpecker is a recent arrival in the garden this year. Don't know if it's nesting there - one certainly used to. I think the very young Roe Deer just pass through and take a wee breather as there is plenty to eat! Seeing a Pine Marten in the wild is a rare treat though! Sounds like you also found some of the highlights for a family day out around and about. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
