Cambridge is a historic university city in the East of England, a popular tourist destination due to both the university colleges, the scenic fields of rural Cambridgeshire and the nearby heritage towns such as Ely and Peterborough. Millions of tourists pass through the city each year, and a combination of the large student population and a city centre which is extremely pedestrian and cyclist-friendly means the area is a perfect place for a family holiday, and great for kids. There is a huge amount to do in and around Cambridge for all the family - the countryside around the city is largely unspoiled and the flat landscape makes for some family friendly walking opportunities. In the town itself, the university dominates the tourist scene - it would be daft to go to Cambridge without visiting at least one of the university's colleges - Harry Potter fans might opt for King's College (where parts of the Harry Potter movies were filmed), and anyone interested in architecture will head straight to Trinity College with its library and courtyard designed by Sir Christopher Wren. Anyone who enjoys messing about in boats will also be keen to grasp the opportunity to hire a punt from The Backs behind King's College, and go punting down the Cam for an hour or so. Also highly recommended is the university's Fitzwilliam Museum - which includes paintings by Constable, Rubens, Titian and Picasso and is free to enter. Young naturalists will also love the opportunity to explore the University Museum of Zoology, which includes in its exhibits some of the fossils collected by Charles Darwin. With a combination of some of the world's best museums and stunning countryside, Cambridge does have something for everyone.

With rental cottages large enough for a family of four available from £300 a week or less, rental accommodation is a great money saving option for a family holiday in this historic university town. As they tend to be outside the city centre, in quiet rural Cambridgeshire, most of the properties also have large gardens and are nice and secluded, which is great for kids - they can run around and make all sorts of noise after a long day's sightseeing without worrying about disturbing other tourists and residents!
