Gran Canaria: an island of contrasts
As the third largest island in the Canaries, Gran Canaria has something for everyone, whether you’re seeking peace and quiet or vibrant nightlife. Away from the coast, you’ll find unspoilt valleys, leafy terrain and breathtaking mountain landscapes. Head towards the beach and you’ll be treated to family-friendly activities, fantastic seafood restaurants and lively bars where you can enjoy a drink or two as the sun sets. The wide range of holiday homes in Gran Canaria means you’re sure to find the perfect place to suit your taste and budget, whether it’s a large villa with sea views and a private pool or a romantic self-catering apartment for two with a terrace.
Natural beauty
One of the best places to appreciate the history and natural beauty of Gran Canaria is at the Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park in Gáldar. The site was discovered by a farmer in the late 19th century and since then, visitors have come to marvel at the cave which is covered in painted geometric shapes which are thought to relate to the lunar and solar calendars. Other must-sees include the Dunas de Maspalomas where you can explore golden sand dunes surrounded by a botanical garden, and Palmitos Park, a subtropical park full of exotic flora and rare species of birds.
Fun at the beach
If you like nothing better than spending most days of your holiday on the beach, then you’ll love Gran Canaria. Have a go a scuba diving, jet skiing, parasailing and balancing on a banana boat or simply lay back and catch some rays with the sound of the waves lapping on the shore. Choose from the more popular beaches, such as Playa de las Canteras with its beautiful seaside promenade, or quieter spots such as the picturesque Gui Gui Beach near Aldea Village. After a day spent soaking up the sun, why not pick up some freshly caught fish and some local produce before heading back to your self-catering rental for a little al fresco dining. Bliss!
