Head to the coastal city of Albufeira, the crowning jewel of the Algarve in Portugal. While the town may be on the Atlantic, thanks to its laidback atmosphere and perfect climate, it feels magically Mediterranean.
Albufeira is home to a vast contrast of landscapes: one moment you’ll be beside beautiful clifftops, and the next rolling hills covered in almond trees. Whatever the reason for your visit, you’ll be sure to fall in love with the resort’s magnificent beaches. And with a huge range of self-catering apartments and villas, choosing somewhere to stay will be easy.
If you’re looking for the area’s best bars and clubs, stay in Areias de São João. Home to Albufeira’s famous strip, you’ll also find plenty of shops and restaurants, as well as the beautiful beach of Oura just a stone’s throw away.
For those who aren’t in pursuit of revelry, Albufeira’s picturesque Old Town, with its charming cobbled streets and blue-tiled houses, offers a wonderful alternative. The neighbourhood is home to a central square surrounded by street cafes and restaurants where you can easily relax for a quiet meal or cool beverage. Shopping enthusiasts will also be in their element - fantastic leather goods and street stalls surround the area and prices are pleasantly affordable.
On the western outskirts of the town is Albufeira marina. Adorned in candy colours, it’s a great place to spend an afternoon. Order a refreshing drink as you sit in the sun and watch boats and people passing by.
If you’re travelling with little ones, inland Albufeira is the perfect base for the Algarve’s family-friendly water and theme parks. A day trip to the postcard-perfect village of Alte, situated up in the northern hills, is also recommended.
Albufeira is spoilt for choice when it comes to good beaches. One of the city’s most popular beaches is Praia dos Pescadores. With a variety of nearby restaurants cooking up some of the region’s best seafood, you can smell the tempting aroma of grilled fish in the air. Throughout the day you’ll even see local fisherman going about their business, proving just how quick the catch of the day can arrive on your plate!
While Albufeira is vibrant and alive during the summer months, it’s also an amazing place to be in autumn and winter after the crowds have gone. For year-round sun and relaxation, escape to Albufeira.
