Scarborough
The seaside town of Scarborough on England's northeast coast has been attracting holidaymakers for over 400 years. First, it was the healing spa waters that drew the crowds and then, the railways made it easier than ever to holiday on the coast. Today, the town hasn't lost its appeal, remaining one of the most popular seaside destinations in the UK. Choose a gorgeous guest house or a self-catering stay in Scarborough for your next holiday.
Beautiful beaches
Your first port of call should be Scarborough beach and harbour. The sand of the South Bay sweeps round in a crescent and is lined with colourful beach huts. Wander to the end of the promenade and you'll arrive at the Scarborough SEA LIFE Sanctuary where you can say hello to over 1,000 different species including penguins. You can also visit the residents of Yorkshire's seal hospital here.
Coast and castle
The ruins of Scarborough Castle stand on the hill between the two bays; battlements and castle walls continue along the headland, adding real drama to the landscape. The castle not only adds a bit of history to your visit, it also provides some of the best panoramic views of this pretty (and underrated) stretch of UK coastline. If you stare to the south, you'll see towards Cayton Bay in the distance; a quieter and more spacious beach. Strewn with interesting pebbles and fossils, it's a beachcomber's paradise.
Going to Scarborough Fair?
A little out of town towards Filey you'll find the Scarborough Fair Collection. It's like stepping back in time with vintage fairground rides like the carousel and bumper cars open to try. The collection also includes vintage cars, traction engines, fair organs and more interesting objects from bygone eras.
