I travel regularly and my partner and I have just finished a 6 week trip, staying in a total of 12 hotels. This was by far the NOISIEST hotel with the worst sleep we have ever stayed in. We had a King Room for 4 nights.
First impressions of the hotel were very good, lovely reception lobby and grounds, with arrival drink. Staff friendly ams helpful. Our ground level room was on the same level as the lobby, which is where the main bar is and where the entertainment occurs. This caused issues particularly at night, as you could hear the singer/band as if they were in your room. The laundry room also on our level a few doors down- could hear the machines going all the time. Walls thin, could hear our neighbours next door and above. Every time the toilet was flushed in the room above, we thought the ceiling was coming in. Did not sleep well for the 4 nights, which was a shame as we had very busy days out and about exploring the beautiful island.
The room itself was great, good facilities and clean, although if you want it serviced they ask for 24 hours notice. Didn't see the need for valet service car parking, made the front entrance to the hotel very congested and would have been quicker getting our own car most of the time.
Think this hotel has a captured audience in Hilo as very limited with other hotel options in the area. Would I stay here again? Maybe, if my room was on the top floor!

Hotel has run down within a year. We stayed here 1 year ago & enjoyed ourselves. We were shocked at how gross our room was when we checked in. There was definitely mold in room 303. My asthma was bad. I know the hotel is old but this stay was definitely not work the cost.

The rooms were clean and updated. We had a two bed room and when you take a shower you have to close the curtain in the bathroom or the other people in your room can see into the bathroom. Not a big deal but odd. The hotel shows it's age in the hallways where the pipes in the ceiling are visible. We had an ocean view but also a view of a couple dilapidated closed properties next to the hotel. Not the Grand Vanilla's fault. We were there for about 16 hours in total, just a place to sleep while we explored the other side of the island. We did not use the pool but it is quite small, similar to a personal pool on someone's property. No jacuzzi noted. Restaurant on site but menu limited and quality average at best.

The location was great, and the views are beautiful. In many ways, this is a great place to stay. But if your room has a door connecting it to an adjoining room, ask to switch to one that does not. We could hear every sound from next door, every conversation, every middle of the night YouTube video, as loudly as if it was taking place in our own room.

We loved our stay here. We had a room with a beautiful room facing the ocean. We stayed 9 nights so it was a great room to return to after an adventure on the island. Our favorite person was Scott, the bartender. He's wonderful. He was super welcoming and was so fun to talk to as we had our cocktail each night. We'd also like to give a shout out to Emma in Hula Hula's. She's so sweet. IT was a pleasure to get our breakfast from her each day. Zoey, the valet, as well as the other valets were right on top of getting our car for us each day. Overall , our experience here was wonderful. The hotel's rooms need some updating, but the grounds/settings, make it all worthwhile.
